Jack Cody

The “Sense of Sight through a Photograph” is a website dedicated to Jack Cody, seeing the world through his lens.

Jack Cody’s passion in life was photography, gravitating towards nature, wildlife, and landscapes as his subjects. Jack, as an avid photographer, writer, and education enthusiast, understood the importance of light to a photograph. He shared that the beauty of a flower cannot be photographed under bright, direct sunlight, but better to photograph in soft light on a cloudy day. He said the same guide works when you want to capture the essence of a person. Jack had a soft touch with his photography; he was patient and thoughtful in order for his audience to truly see the beauty of his subject from his eye to his lens to the photograph shared. Jack’s photography was his way of telling a story, his story…

Jack Cody was born on August 8, 1947 to Jerry and Ruth Cody in Sterling, Colorado. Jack was an only child, spending a lot of time with his father and mother. Jack’s mother was a sweet, caring woman who made amazing cinnamon knots, Jack’s favorite. Jack and his father really enjoyed getting out into nature together, whether walking or taking a drive, they craved the beautiful landscapes, the wildlife and the camaraderie of father-son conversation. Thus, began his love for the outdoors.

In addition to nature, Jack had a passion for learning. Following his high school graduation, Jack attended the Northeastern Junior College, graduating in 1967. Jack decided to continue with his education at the University of Northern Colorado.  In 1969, he graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor’s Degree of Education and an emphasis in Special Education. Immediately following his graduation, Jack began to teach while also attending the University of Northern Colorado’s Master’s Program. During this time, he met a beautiful Iranian woman and, in 1975, they were married. Jack and his wife decided to move to Iran for a brief period to spend some time with her family. During his time in Iran, he taught English while photographing their adventures. After returning to Colorado, Jack resumed teaching and, in 1978, graduated with a Master’s Degree in Special Education. In 1979, Jack and his wife welcomed their first child, a daughter.

In the late 1970’s, Jack had been teaching for approximately 10 years, as well as was working towards his doctorate in Special Education Administration. He had completed all the coursework, leaving just his doctoral thesis to finish; however, he felt a lack of connection. So, in 1983, Jack decided to make a career change and applied to the Palmer College of Chiropractic. Jack was accepted and quickly moved his family to Iowa, beginning a new chapter in his life. In 1984, Jack and his wife welcomed their second child, a son. During his doctorate program at Paller College of Chiropractic, Jack decided to write his thesis on the “Sense of Sight through a Photograph” to share his passion of photography with his new chosen profession. In 1986, Jack graduated from Chiropractic College, telling everyone he was one of the oldest in his graduating class. Soon after graduation, Jack moved his family back to Colorado to open his private practice in Greeley and reconnect with the mountains. He wanted to continue to capture his love for nature through his camera lens.

Jack’s intellect and connection to nature truly shines through in his photography. Along with photography, Jack was an avid storyteller, leaving no detail to spare. Throughout his life, Jack loved to capture each moment with his camera to enhance and support his stories. In addition, Jack enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, being outdoors, reading, writing, learning, and spending time with his 5 grandchildren. Jack would spend hours taking in the beauty this world has to offer by snapping photos of his discoveries to share with family and friends.

Jack was the best grandpa to his 5 grandchildren! He taught his grandchildren about nature, fishing, and photography. One Christmas, he gifted each grandchild a camera; watching them explore their world through their own camera lens brought Jack much joy, and much laughter.

Sadly, on October 20, 2021, Jack passed away. He is greatly missed by his family and friends but leaves a compilation of scenic photographs we wish to share with the world.
